Every Christian has his own heavenly defenseman – to him in difficult moments of life, asking for support and understanding. It may be a martyr bearing the same name as was given to you in baptism, a righteous man whose day of veneration falls on your birthday, or a companion, to whom you have a special mental disposition. But to choose a revered patron, you need to know his life and the feats committed. Our article will acquaint you with the history of one of the most famous Orthodox saints, tell you what George the Victorious pray for and whom he protected.
Legends of the Life of Saint George the Victorious
As the church tales say, the righteous was born in 276 in Belite (modern name – Beirut). His father, Gerontius, held the position of Cappadocian commander, but because the man confessed Christianity, he was executed when George was still a child. After that, the boy's mother, Polychrony, moved with him to his parents in the city. Lidd (Palestine). There the young man was trained by the best mentors, comprehending the wisdom of rhetoric, stymics, hand-to-hand fights and battles with weapons. He was soon called up for military service.
In the battles, the righteous showed courage, prudence, and the ability to predict the actions of the enemy. For this he in 20 years made the senior over the cohort of inquiktiorov-invincible (so called the best soldiers). And after the Roman-persian war (296-27.) George became a comite of – trusted companion of the bishop who accompanied him during his trips around the country.
However, despite personal successes, the companion could not but empathize with the tortures to which Christians were subjected. Emperor Diocletian, who ruled from 284 to 305, was a fierce supporter of paganism and persecuted all who dared to profess a different faith. His decrees ordered the destruction of churches, the breaking of sacred books, the expulsion of the followers of the Savior from honorary positions. After hearing about it, George the Victorious realized that it was time for him to suffer for Jesus Christ. He distributed all his possessions to the poor, freed the slaves, and appeared on the advice of the bishop with other nobles, saying: «Is it long for you, the king with other princes, to do evil and get lost, bowing before idols? Here I stand before you and testify to the only true God».
After hearing this, the emperor was extremely angry. He commanded the righteous to put in the pads and put a huge stone on his chest. However, the martyr humbly endured torture, answering the ruler that no suffering could distract him from faith. For this ascetic was subjected to wheeling – and when he almost let go of the spirit, an angel suddenly appeared before the audience, who healed George and promised him heavenly bliss.
Having witnessed such an amazing miracle, the Lord believed many courts – for example, the sanovaries Anatoly and Protoleon, as well as the queen Alexander. For this they were sentenced to cut off the heads, and the saint was thrown into a deep pit, falling asleep with a negative lime (now on this place the church of George Winnipeg) was built. But when the servants decided to dig his bones three days later, they found the martyr intact and unharmed. The stricken Diocletian asked the ascetic what magic he used, to which the young man replied that he had saved him not charms, but God's permission – but the pagans seduced by the devil are unable to see the highest fishery.
After that, the nobleman Magnentius told the emperor to resort to the help of the wolves. The sorcerer Athanasius was called to the court, ordering him either to win, dispelling the defending power of the saint and making him obedient, or to kill the righteous. The magician prepared two drugs – one of them had to break the will of the companion, and the second was a deadly poison. However, no poison could damage a zealous Christian.
The martyr was imprisoned again. By that time, the fame of him had already spread throughout the country – people bribed the guards to see the saint. According to the akathist George the Victorious, one day the farmer Glicerius appeared to him, complaining that he had a single bull. The companion comforted the poor in such words: «Don't be sad, brother! My God will give life to your cattle». And indeed, when the farmer came home, he saw a healthy will.
And the next night Jesus Christ himself appeared before the righteous. He hugged George, laying a sparkling crown on his head, and encouraged him not to be afraid, but to dare –. After all, before the pure soul of the young man, the Kingdom of God was about to open. The saint immediately called to himself his faithful servant Pasikrat, commanding him to describe the vision in detail.
When dawn broke, Diocletian, along with the retinue and shackled martyr, went to the temple of Apollo. There, the ascetic tried to force him to bow before the idol, but he turned to him with the words: «Do you accept from me a sacrifice like the Lord?». The evil spirit who lived in the statue shouted, recognizing that God was only Jesus Christ, and then all the temple statues were destroyed. Angry priests began to beat the saint, and the emperor handed him the death sentence. When George was brought to the scaffold, he asked to take off his shackles, kneeled and began to pray, and then with a calm smile lay under the sword. The execution of the righteous was carried out on April 23, 303, on Friday.
All of these events are not only chronicled in the life of the martyr - Christians also captured them in miniature images and seals that frame the icon of 'Saint George the Victorious.' The martyr's heroic deeds, unparalleled courage, and fearless resistance to evil have become an example for all Christians. Additionally, thanks to the Divine mercy, the righteous one's name was glorified even after death through numerous miracles.
Legends of Saint George the Dragon
Thus, one of the most famous acts of the ascetic is his victory over a huge snake that lived near Beirut. The monster ruined the neighborhood, devouring people and sheep, poisoned water and air. In order to propitiate him, the inhabitants of that area began to sacrifice the nightmare of their children. Finally, the lot fell on the only daughter of King – but when the girl was doomed to wait for death, a spear-bearer horseman appeared before her on a snow-white horse. He encouraged the beauty, and then crossed with the words: «In the name of God-Father, and Son, and the Holy Spirit!» he rushed to the terrible creature, hitting her in the throat and reaching her with the sword. After that, the grateful citizens turned to Christianity and built the temple of George Winnipeg. When the cathedral was consecrated, a spring was scored near it, the water from which healed many diseases.
Other miracles are mentioned in the church chronicles. For example, in Ramel, the martyr punished the saracen, who shot from a bow in his image. The blasphemy's hand was swollen and unbearable until the priest advised to hold a night prayer vigil near the relic and then anoint the affected place with a lamp oil. The next morning, the man recovered and was baptized.
Another unusual event happened in the city of Lidd. Before the military campaign, one knight promised to sacrifice his horse, which he liked very much, to the church of St. Petersburg. Georgi. And when the army returned with a victory, the man became sorry to give the beloved pet, and he tried to get gold and precious stones. However, the horse itself came to the cathedral, and did not move from the place until the owner announced that he was transferring it to the property of the priests. This case teaches all believers to abide by the vows given to the Lord.
And in the Middle Ages, the companion appeared before one pious widow. The woman for many years collected money to order a carved column – she had to decorate the church of George Winnipeg in Ramel. But no merchant agreed to transport the capitel on his ship. Matrona turned to Lord – and the next night the pillar fell into a building under construction. In addition, a personal signature of the martyr appeared among the carvings.
